Keyword Strategies
We'd all like to be top of
the search results for every keyword relevant to our business - but sadly
it isn't going to happen! That's why you need to narrow your
keyword strategy and focus on optimising your website to be top
of the Search Engine results for those keywords/phrases.
You can ask our
Search Engine Optimisation
Consultants to do free research and recommendation of
a keyword strategy for your website.
Find out which
keywords/phrases are easy to get top of the search results
You can follow a simple
4-step process to find out if what keywords/phrases are easy
to get your website top of the Search Engine results.
STEP 1:
Selecting keywords/phrases
You'll be surprised to
learn which keywords/phrases your customers are searching to find your
business online.
Enter your most desired keyword
HINT: A florist might choose "flowers" (may take up to 30
seconds)
Choose the top few most popular keywords/phrases
that your customers are searching.
STEP 2:
View the competitive landscape
Go to
Google and do a
search for each keyword/phrase. Obviously, if you are interested in
Australian visitors only choose "pages from Australia".
Open up the top listed
website that you want to beat in the Search Engine results.
STEP 3: Check out their PageRank
NOTE: You'll
need the Google toolbar installed.
Go to
http://toolbar.google.com and install it. It doesn't take long.
Now every time you view a website, you can
see their PageRank. This is Google's measure of the importance of this
webpage.
Check out the PageRank of
the top listed website for your keyword/phrases and assume the following
rules of thumb:
PageRank |
How this webpage
got this PageRank |
0 |
If the PageRank is white and therefore
the PageRank is 0, the website has either been blacklisted from
Google for using Search Optimisation tricks. Be careful! Follow our
Search Engine Optimisation tips
and avoid being blacklisted. Or, it has only recently been visited
for the first time, in which case it takes about 2 months for your
PageRank to be recorded. |
'not ranked' |
Google has yet to visit this website.
The website either needs to get lots of links from other websites (external
links) so Google ends up crawling the website, or needs to find
a
Search Engine
Submission technique that will work. |
1-3 |
The website has been visited by Google
and found to be relatively unimportant, due to lack of external
links |
4 |
Google has probably found about 10
external links to this website |
5 |
Google has found lots of external links
to this website, and probably found that the website has lots of
webpages. Both of these issues contribute to Google believing that
this website is looking important. |
6-10 |
Google has found 100's of external
links to this website. |
STEP 4:
Check out if links to this website are likely to be keyword/phrase
relevant
All things being equal, it
is much harder to beat a website in the Search Engine results if every
hyperlink to that website includes the keyword/phrase.
Hence, you can't beat
Microsoft in the Search Engine results for a search like "microsoft",
because there are 1,000's of links from other websites to the Microsoft
website which say something like "Buy FrontPage from
Microsoft".
Similarly, be wary of
thinking you can beat industry associations. Beating the
Australian Film Commission
on a search for "film" is hard, because there are a lot of links to the
Commission, all of which include the word "Film".
Similarly websites with generic domain names. You can't beat
Travel.com.au in a
search for "travel".
Draw your conclusions -
can you be top of the Search Engine results?
Does your website have a
higher PageRank than someone else?
YES - you can beat them in
the Search Engine Results
BUT - it's harder if they're an industry association, or have a generic
domain name.
Assuming you are currently
ranked between 'not ranked' and a PageRank 3 you can pursue an aggressive
Search Engine Optimisation strategy and hope to have a PageRank of 4-5
within 3-6
months.
You can now work out what
position you should be able to achieve in the Search Engine results and
within what time frame.
