About Google
What
is semantic indexing?
Google has now deployed Conceptual Information Retrieval and
Communication Architecture (CIRCA) in it's search algorithm that
allows it to better understand what a webpage is "about".
By example, Google now knows
that a webpage "about holidays" is likely to be relevant to searches
"about vacations".
You can read the
whitepaper on semantic indexing here
(PDF format).
How
does Google decide how relevant a word is to another word?
Semantic indexing seeks to apply a
semantic space between
words. A semantic space defines the separation between two words.
-
Singular words have very little
separation (semantic space) from plurals
-
"vacation" will have relatively
little separation for "holiday"
-
"kitchen" will have a large-ish
space from "cutlery"
How
does this impact on search engine optimisation and getting top of the
search results?
Semantic indexing has a number of benefits for well optimised website
owners.
1. A
site that is already doing well in the search results for "used
laptops" is now going to be doing well for the singular "used laptop".
Their traffic just nearly doubled.
2. A
strong site on the subject of "weight loss", is going to be doing a
lot better for a phrase "losing weight" that happens to be mentioned
on their site.
3. Most
importantly a website whose
incoming links originate from industry players has just taken off!
